Sunday Stuff

Hey, did you know I won a Pioneer Woman giveaway?  No it wasn’t for a fancy mixer or a fabulous camera or anything.  But I’m still excited because these measuring cups are TDF (that’d To Die For, in case you aren’t aware).  Aren’t you just insanely jealous now?  I can’t believe I finally won one of those giveaways.  I don’t enter all of them (a lot of them have very short time spans to enter and many times I don’t learn about the giveaway until the deadline is over), but I enter a lot.  Then again, a LOT of people enter a lot of the giveaways.  So the fact the fact that I was one of ten winners?  Makes me insanely happy.  You should have heard me shriek when I saw the post with my name on it.

I think Kile is still recovering his hearing.

Speaking of Kile.  He’s getting a new toy today.  I will take pictures.  I’m in turn glad for him because I know this is something he wants and incredibly annoyed because he’s been a pill about planning for this and stressing about it and generally obsessing.   I’ll be glad when it “arrives” and then maybe I’ll just shove it up his butt.

I haven’t shared some pictures in a while so I think I need to catch up.  Please refrain from pointing out if any one child is in more pictures than another, mmkay?  Otherwise I may feel obliged to thwack you in the head.

IMG_0691 This is what we woke up to in Elko the morning we were leaving to drive back to Reno last weekend.  I call this “pretty snow” because it coats everything and looks gorgeous and then takes like an hour to completely melt.  Awesome.

IMG_0429 Evie crapped out during breakfast and took a nap on her aunt’s shoulder.  Her aunt didn’t mind one bit.

IMG_0432 Yes, Liam is short, but my brother in law is also VERY TALL.  His t-shirt this day was appropriate for pretty much anyone who stood next to him but with regards to Liam?  Doubly funny.

IMG_0433 *cough*

Fluffy mail This is what we call “fluffy mail” in the cloth diapering/knitting/sewing biz and it was GOOD.

IMG_0693 I love the sun shining through icicles.  ❤

Bruise Yes, that’s a bruise.  And no, I don’t know how I got it.  Yes, it hurts.

Speaking of “fluffy mail” I was anxiously awaiting this diaper which I had ordered last week.  The above is what I got instead. SIGH.

So that’s it.  I’m going shopping today with my mother in law, sister in law and niece who came to town this weekendly SIMPLY to go shopping.  No boys allowed!  I am so THERE.

Have you ever felt that when things are really busy for you, that your attention is being pulled in fifteen different directions, that attention isn’t whole?  That your attention tends to fragment and splinter and so each issue, each project that is demanding your attetion only gets a fragment of it?  Because that is exactly how I feel right now.  For the last month, I’ve had more than a handful of different things clamoring for my notice and it’s almost made me become ADD or something.  I have a hard time concentrating on any one thing at any one time.  My brain is so full of thoughts that I am routinely forgetting things that I want to (or NEED to) do.

I’m not a fan of this.

I’m hoping to get things under control SOON.  And maybe, just maybe, once things are under control then I can start truly giving this poor neglected blog the attention it deserves.  I swear, the Blog Gods are going to come and take away my blog if I can’t start taking care of it properly.

IMG_0234-1 I finished my first paid custom pair of longies late last week and they got shipped off in the mail on Saturday.  I am beyond happy with how they came out.  And I’m not even a fan of orange!  These pants are so bright and happy and fun that it truly was a pleasure to knit them.  I really hope their new owner loves them as much as I do.

Speaking of which, I’m thinking of doing a craft blog.  Okay, I just heard your brain explode over there.  I know it seems extremely foolish to start ANOTHER blog when I can’t even give the ones I already have the time of day anymore.  But before you chuck something at my head, I was thinking of having it be a ground-zero for keeping track of my customs list and posting pictures of my projects and maybe some tips and tricks as I think them up.  Yeah?  Good idea, huh?  So that’s one of the things that I’m trying to do but due to the fragmented attention, not so much yet.

IMG_0224-1 I just got this fabulous diaper late last week.  It was one of the “SYOF” diapers (which basically stands for Send Your Own Fabric… sort of like a custom) that I was lucky enough to get in on.  It’s not my Holy Grail Diaper (that would be Wine Country) (and yes, I realize it’s fairly absurd to have a Holy Grail Diaper) but it’s way up there and I am beyond excited to have it.  Evie’s 1st Birthday outfit is sorta based around this diaper (provided I can concentrate long enough to plan/purchase/acquire the rest of the outfit!).

IMG_0248 Harry has been having fun playing on my old-n-busted laptop while he’s on break from school this month.  And I thought this was too cute where the two little ones were clustered around him watching him play (Evie was trying to help, apparently).  I love these little moments where my three kids are coexisting peacefully together.  It helps make up for the times that Harry pushes Liam down or Liam chucks his sippy cup at Evie’s head.

IMG_0252 Yep.  Those are my diapers.  All of the ones I have (so far) (I have at least two on the way), minus a plain one called “Iced Lolly” that Evie had worn to bed and was therefore sullied.  It’s kind of ridiculous how much I love these diapers, mostly because they work so damn well and look so damned cute at the same time.  (Seriously, ya’ll, NO BLOWOUTS.  EVER.)  Actually, I’m not sure I love Swords and Roses (the newest one and the one next to the pink kitty diaper).  But I’m trying to ignore that little voice that says, “SELL!”

IMG_0255 On Saturday we drove over to Portola (about 30 minutes away to the north-west in Northern California) to hang out at a cabin with my sister in law and her family.  It was very snowy and pretty there.  I took this picture from the (dry and warm) back step.  I love my new camera and it’s bodacious zoom.

IMG_0262 I love snow.  I love everything about it.  Well okay, maybe not driving in it.  But everything else for sure.  And I love playing around with the manual setting on the new camera, particularly the manual focus.  Hee!

IMG_0268 Harry got a chance to go sledding while we were there and his feet didn’t freeze up and fall off despite the fact that he forgot to bring his boots.

It actually kinda kills me how big he’s getting.  He needs to KNOCK THAT OFF.

IMG_0273 There has been a lot of snow and storm this weekend.  We were supposed to go back to the cabin on Sunday but they got like TWO FEET of snow so we decided OH HECK NO.  We stayed in town where we did not get two feet of snow but rather some cold and miserable “wintery mix”.  I think I would have rather had the two feet of snow.

And then yesterday was just a “free day”.  God, I love three day weekends.  Of course, now I’m going to be messed up all week long about what day it actually is.  Which doesn’t help my whole resolution to get things under control in my life.  This week I want to accomplish (in no particular order):

  • starting the craft blog
  • finishing the last minute special customs I’m knitting for my mom
  • finish setting up my Hyena Cart shop
  • return to posting here EVERY DAY
  • post a couple things to my cloth diaper blog
  • delete the Christmas songs off my iPhone to free up some much needed room
  • reorganize my yarn stash and take inventory on what I have
  • take inventory on my knitting needles and other knitting notions
  • laundry and more laundry and then after that?  laundry
  • dye the yarn I bought
  • see if I can’t find a reasonable scale somewhere that will measure ounces and grams

Okay.  I think that’s all there is.  For now, at least.  So what are you hoping to get done this week?  I’m hoping none of you are feeling as fragmented as I am right now because it’s not a terribly happy feeling.  Happy Tuesday, ya’ll!

Catching Up Via Pictures

Okay, so I have been a really, really, REALLY bad blogger.  Apparently once you miss one day of posting, it becomes insanely easy to miss MANY days of posting.  Of course, I did have the sorta excuse of being out of town all weekend. But… Still.  I should be better.

The good thing about being lazy blogger for a few days is that I have some stuff to talk about. So let’s see… where to start…

Plumish That there yarn I dyed looks almost professional.  Go me! I plan to do some more. This was achieved via Kool Aid, and no, it doesn’t make it sticky.  I’m going to try some Wilton’s food dye next, as I’ve heard that can come out pretty neat too.

IMG_0128 The Britax has landed!  It arrived just in time, on Thursday night, for our trip to San Jose on Friday.  The last I mentioned the Great Car Seat Decision of 2009, there was some expressions of incredulity at the price of a Britax carseat.  I know they’re expensive.  But I also know that expense is very much worth it to us.  With Harry, we had to save money and get a more inexpensive carseat.  I’ve had both kinds, and believe me, the Britax is WORTH IT.  Part of it is because it is soooooo much easier to install these properly and therefore more safely.  And the kids are a lot more comfortable in them.  And this particular seat we got will allow us to leave Liam harnessed until he’s 80lbs and used as a booster until 100lbs.  After all the videos I’ve seen on YouTube about toddlers in accidents where they aren’t harnessed?  YEAH.  No-brainer.  And?  We know they’ll last until we don’t need carseats anymore, which counts for a lot, because they’re quality made. Don’t knock them till you try them!  (Which isn’t to say that some less expensive seats aren’t safe, but you can never convince me that they’re as easy or as comfortable.  Trust me.  I’ve tried them ALL.)

IMG_0131 A diaper that, can you believe it, I don’t want.  I ended up selling this.  Ah well.  It paved the way for a diaper that I wanted more so in the end, it was all for the best.

Yarn! (PixUp) Look at all that yarn!  It was sent to me so I could knit some lovely things for some lovely people.  So sadly, it’s not MY yarn, but I do get to play with it.  I think I want to marry it.  LOL.  And even MORE came yesterday.  I’m a busy, busy girl!

IMG_0135 Yeah, there was snow on the summit when we drove over the mountain.  It was pretty!  And thankfully, not on the road!  It’s snowing here on and off today but nothing much is sticking.  C’est la vie.  So much for winter, eh?

IMG_0137 Liam and Evie had a good time at my parents’ house.  Evie enjoyed having another set of people to fawn over and her and to flirt with.  And Liam enjoyed the attention and the new surroundings to explore.  This was a rare moment where they both stopped their adventuring to watch a cartoon together.  It lasted approximately .15 seconds.

IMG_0143 This was also taken at my parents’ house.  It’s not that the brotherly love exhibited in this photo is that rare, but the PEACE is.  Notice: Harry is not climbing over the back of the couch and bellowing like a hellfiend and Liam is not screaming and running out of the frame.  I’ll take it.

IMG_0177 This is being knit from some of that yarn in the picture before.  I did most of this in the car to and from San Jose.  I tell you what, knitting is the PERFECT car activity because it makes the time just FLY by.  Anyhow, these are being knit for a wonderful gal who contacted me on Etsy.  And the yarn was doing a thing called “pooling” up near the top but I tried what I could to minimize it’s effects.  I hope to have these done in another day or so.

IMG_0148 Harry with two of his favorite things.  Pup and Rock Band.  And, oh yeah, he’s going to need braces.  GREAT.

IMG_0149 Liam got this hard hat with a construction truck set my parents got him as a gift.  He comes over to me about 10 times a day to ask me to put it on his head.

IMG_0163 I love when he does this.  He always carries that nasty dolphin around by the tail and when he’s feeling tender or mellow, he’ll rub the dolphin’s tale against his cheek.  It makes my heart swell when I see him do it and for a small moment in time, I can forget that the rest of the time he’s a tornado on legs.

IMG_0171-Edit And I’m finisheing with ME!  I’ve taken in the last day or so to putting my hair in pigtails.  It’s not quite long enough yet on the sides for a ponytail and the pig tails are both adorable (if I do say so myself) and keep my hair out of my face.  Bonus!  And no, I don’t have any idea why I have a pair of toddler socks in my front pocket.  I didn’t notice that until I was developing the picture in Lightroom.  D’oh!

And the soul felt it's worth

Merry Christmas, everyone!  I hope everyone is having a top-notch holiday.  After having a serious bout of the “bah, humbugs” yesterday, I’ve finally come around to this whole “Christmas thing” and am officially “feeling it”.  For the moment.  I’ll keep you posted.

And so this is Christmas.  It was a rough night, what with The Wind That Wouldn’t Get the Hint and LEAVE TOWN ALREADY.  Plus, you know, good, old-fashioned Christmas anticipation.  Between the two, I got little uninterupted sleep.  And I was up shortly after 5am.  Evie woke up about an hour later.  And a half hour after she woke up, we heard the boys giggling in their room so it was finally Time.  We descended the stairs and the children were greeted with:

Santa Wuz Here Recession?  What recession?

And what about me?  Did I get what I wanted the most for Christmas this year?  Did I get what I had been (not-so) patiently waiting for?  Here is what I saw out the door this morning:

White Christmas Woo hoo!  SNOW!  About friggin’ time!

I hope you all got what you most wanted this fine, wintery morning.  Merry Christmas to you all, from my house to yours.  As my little gift to you, here are some snaps from the last day or so.  No new camera to take pictures on, but I suppose the other one will do for now.  Besides, I know there’s a MacBook in my future.  (Come on, tax return!!)

Snow Envy

It has been well-documented on this blog that my greatest of Weather Nemesis is Wind. I hate the wind. Hate. It. There pretty much isn’t anygood reason for wind. And I’m not talking about a breeze here. I mean WIND. The kind that rips downs fences and threatens my sanity.

We’ve had an awful lot of wind lately. And, frankly, it’s starting to piss me off. Because behind that wind has been a great potential for snow. But as long as the wind is here, the snows right over the top of us and heads for parts east. Around here, they call it a “rain shadow“. I call it “a tease”:

See that there?  That’s what the radar looks like RIGHT NOW.  And will we actually see the snow here in Reno.  NOPE.  I will BET YOU.  Damnit.

See, I’ve been reading on everyone’s blogs about all the snow they’ve been getting and more than a little jealous.  I want to have a disgusting amount of snow too!  I deserve a white Christmas too, don’t I?  It’s not FAIR!

We’re supposed to have some snow in the next couple of days.  There was supposed to be snow today but… yeah, not so much.  MAYBE later?  I’ll hold my breath.  But here is the forcast for the next few days:

And that’s backed off quite a bit from what it said before, which was also AM Snow tomorrow and snow on Friday (which I was really, really counting on).  But at the very LEAST can’t I get some snow on Wednesday and Thursday?  For Christmas?  Pretty, pretty please?

Pictures Aplenty

I don’t know if you all hate these posts of mine that are full of photos or if you like them.  I guess it doesn’t matter because I’ll still post photos even if you all don’t like them.  I like them.  I think they give me a nice snapshot of what things are like around here at any specific given time.  And I love being able to see how my photography skills (what skills?) (oh, hush you!) have progressed too.  I’m always learning new things about taking pictures.  Yes, even on my cruddy point and shoot.

All of these were developed in Adobe Lightroom, which is a fabulous, wonderful program that every picture-taker out there should have on their computer.  These pictures never saw the light of Adobe Photoshop (though it remains my go-to program for “serious” edits).

Fingers Woah, check out this hand!

Baby Girl I never get tired of this little face…

Sweet Smile or her sweet little smiles.

Evie The sweetness just oozes off of her.

Monch The silliness oozes too.

Good lookin' One more.  I can’t take the cute!

Kile's new hat Kile’s rad new hat.  Made by ME.

Ripples It’s been so cold that the snow that fell was rather powdery and any little breeze could blow these little ripples in it.  Very cool.

Sparkly Sparkly, too!

Weed Isn’t it funny how snow an make even a stupid weed look cool?

Peavine The mountain looks awesome after it’s snowed.

Mama's Girl Reaching out for the camera… she’s obsessed with it now!

Foggy It got to like TWO DEGREES last night and was NINE this morning so the sun came up and the fog came out.

Foggy Call me crazy, but I think fog is pretty awesome.  You know, when you don’t have to drive in it.

Foggy Fog makes everything look so insubstantial. I think that’s why I like it so much.

Foggy Nothing looks quite so harsh when it’s obscured by fog.  Even a Wednesday morning.

Pogonip This is what happens when it’s so cold and it’s foggy.  The fog turns to icy particles and sticks to stuff, like this wee tree.

Pogonip It’s called “pogonip”, which is a funny word, don’t you think?  It’s also very pretty.

Icicles These are some good, old-fashioned icicles though.  Dripped onto our Russian Sage which is taking the winter off.

Sacked out And you know I gotta close with another shot of the princess.  She sacked out on my lap this morning and it was just too cute to believe.

Ahh.  I feel much better now.

Monday Hate List – Now With Pictures!

I don’t generally condone of the word “hate” because it has such strong connotations, but in this case, I think Monday deserves it.  How dare it force us out of the lull that is the weekend and make us be productive and stuff!  So here’s what I’m hating today:

  1. That we’re about out of groceries here in the house, but yet the budget gave out last week sometime.  Hmm.
  2. Little dogs that desperately try to curl themselves up on my legs in an effort to stay warm and give me leg cramps.
  3. iCarly, the Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana, the Naked Brothers Band, Drake and Josh and any of those retarded Disney/Nick shows that my son seems to really, really love right now.
  4. Maggie and the Ferocious Beast, Miss Spider’s Sunny Patch Friends and pretty much the entire Noggin morning lineup these days.
  5. I pretty much hate money in general right now, but mostly the lack of it.
  6. That my parents’ gift STILL hasn’t been mailed off and now I’m worried that it’ll even get there before Christmas and that gives me STRESS.  STRESS STRESS STRESS!
  7. Not that I have a van to drive it to the post office anyhow.  (still not registered but whatever)
  8. Which means I need to rely on Kile to do it.
  9. Which means I’m not holding my breath.
  10. Stupid, nagging, caffeine-withdrawal headache.  I need a Rockstar.

So now that I got that out of the way, here are some pictures I cleaned off the camera this morning.

A boy and his cup The rarely-captured feral blue-eyed boy.

Mirthful Eyes The cup is a staple in virtually all photos of this child.

Snowflake Pin A nifty snowflake pin given to me by a good friend for my birthday.  It is officially Evie’s Most Favorite Thing EVER.

Blob Bag My first knitting project, my “practice blob” that I decided to turn into a bag this weekend.  GO ME.

Brr Does this look cold?  Cuz it is.

Wee Snowy Tree Little tree.  Snow.  Nuff said.

First Snowy Day Sure looks like a Monday morning to me, how about you?  I’m SO glad Harry takes the school bus now.

White Van in White Kile’s van (aka: our only legal mode of transportation these days).  And snow.  Have fun driving to work, Kile!

Buggin' me

We’ve got nearly one week of December under our belts and so far I’m not impressed.  See, December is usually my most favorite of all the months.  There’s my birthday, Christmas and New Years.  There’s colder temperatures and snow.  There’s festive music and lots of holiday candy.  What isn’t to love (don’t answer that)?

So far, December has left me underwhelmed.

  • We have a budget crunch that is causing all sorts of stress and drama. Worrying about crap like this does not do wonders for ones Christmas spirit.
  • Harry’s school is cheesing me off too.  They have a “Holiday Shop” every year, staffed by the PTA, where kids can go and spend a couple bucks on presents for their family.  We sent Harry on Monday with $20.  All week long, he’s told us the shop is closed during recess, the only time he really has to go to it, since he takes the bus after school.  So Kile drove him to school this morning so they could be there when this thing theoretically “opened”.  Turns out?  They’ve been having a hard time staffing it so it’s only been open after school.  Yep, when Harry has to take the bus home.  Kile is planning to take off work early on Monday and pick him up so he can go to the Holiday Shop at long, long last.  In the meantime, I think this is awfully prejudiced against the poor kids who have to take the bus.   Boo!
  • Harry put his iPod in the wash.  Yep, the one we JUST got him for his birthday.  The one that we got to replace the mp3 player that he put in the wash several months ago.
  • What the HECK.  It’s like constantly 55 degrees during the day here.  And that’s the forcast for the next week as well.  This is NOT Christmas weather.  I better see some snow and SOON, damnit.

So what’s cheesing you off this week?

Blown Away

I swear, if Canadian bloggers are sick of blogging about the extreme cold in the winter, then I am sick of posting about the ridiculous wind we get out here. Because that is what it is. RIDICULOUS. If you want to know how ridiculous, just search for how many times “windy day” has been mentioned on this blog. Go ahead. I dare you. With that in mind, check out what I saw when I woke up from my nap this afternoon:

Blown Away

It might be hard to tell, but that there is a truck that freakin’ BLEW off the interstate up there. The cab was laying across one of the north/westbound lanes and traffic behind this whole mess was pretty much stopped for a good thirty minutes. Quite the sight, right? Which, you know, would be something if it weren’t the SECOND TIME that this has happened since we’ve lived out here. The thing that gets me is that it’s pretty much in the exact same spot this happened before. Of course!

For now, the snow has started up (yep, again) and the wind has petered out somewhat (I mean, it could still blow away small children and dogs out there, but I doubt anymore semi-trucks will be flying off the roadway). The cab of the poor truck above was lifted out of there and removed and traffic has since returned to normal. All that remains is the sad trailer, laying on it’s side, getting all snowed on. I imagine, like last time, they’ll come remove it in a day or so. Such is living out here in the Windy West. Can I move now?

Edit: Heh, check it out.
